Press release: Sustainable beet cultivation for Raffinerie Tirlemontoise and parent company Südzucker

Tirlemont – 25/11/2016
The world of agriculture is our main partner, and our customers are our priority. Increasingly improved integration of the entire food sector (agricultural/raw material to finished food product) will result in rising demand in the different layers of the chain. What is the answer to this? Sustainable Agriculture Initiative, or SAI. All sugar-producing branches of the major European food company, Südzucker AG, meet the silver criteria of the SAI platform.

SAI, a collaboration between the sugar manufacturer and the farmer

SAI is a platform that was launched by fifty industry (food & drink) companies with the aim of bringing sustainable agricultural practices together in order to make exchanges. These companies are the buyers of choice for primary agricultural products. As a sugar producer, we form a part of the production chain for many food products, and we are in direct contact with the farmer. The SAI Platform is focused on a wide variety of topics, ranging from water conservation, sustainable working conditions for the employees, to the economic viability of a farm. In short, ensuring balance between Planet - People - Profit; the 3Ps of sustainability.

SAI in Belgium - recognised by Vegaplan

In Belgium, SAI Vegaplan (a certification system for primary agricultural products dedicated to farmers) is recognised as a sustainable partner. The Vegaplan system has been set up by the agricultural sector and guarantees quality, food safety and sustainability of farming practices in Belgium. With this recognition, together with the farmers, we are not required to go through the comprehensive questionnaire of the SAI Platform, resulting in time savings for both parties!

The Vegaplan certificate is part of our contracts with beet growers at Raffinerie Tirlemontoise. As a result, the sustainability is also guaranteed in the subsequent production chains. Or at any rate, for our sweet commodity, sugar.
