Kristien De Schepper, intern @ Raffinerie Tirlemontoise

When did your adventure start at Raffinerie Tirlemontoise?

The first day of my internship at the Communications’ department of Raffinerie Tirlemontoise started 6 July 2015. I was quite nervous as it was the first time I would work on a work floor other than a supermarket, where I have had a job as a student for more than seven years. I arrived at the office about 9 o’clock, was allocated a desk and laptop and was able to start immediately!

What does your working day look like?

I don’t think there is such a thing as a typical working day in the communications department. Every day is different, which is great of course. A varied range of tasks gives you the opportunity to learn new things in different areas. This is particularly important during an internship! As an intern at Raffinerie Tirlemontoise you certainly won’t be making coffee and helping out at the printer. You will be working on different competencies that will be important later in your ‘real working life’.

How would you describe the atmosphere at Raffinerie Tirlemontoise?

If you read the different interviews on the Raffinerie Tirlemontoise website, people say time and again that there is a family atmosphere within the company. I have had the opportunity to experience this first-hand for a month now and its right – there is time for a personal chat and everyone is always ready to help you if you can’t do something. This helps for a good atmosphere and better work results.

What do you think of your job and life at Raffinerie Tirlemontoise?

I only worked for a month at Raffinerie Tirlemontoise, but it was a really fantastic experience. If I don’t go back to work for the company later, I will certainly be able to use my experience in any other job I take. If my fellow students ever ask me to recommend a company for an internship, I will definitely encourage them to apply for a place at Raffinerie Tirlemontoise. The whole experience is just full of positives!

What’s your favourite sugar of Tirlemont?

My favourite product is the icing sugar as it tastes so delicious on a warm waffle. Another great product is the Espresso Sugar Cube as the traditional Sugar Cubes are often too big and make my coffee too sweet. The Espresso Sugar Cubes are the perfect size and mean you can add just the right amount of sweetness.
